What do you make of the morality of masturbation?

As a Child and Youth Care practitioner, one of the aspects of my work is that I consult and engage with a variety of youth to help them find a means to experience growth. That’s my really complicated way of saying “I hang out with young people.” And I frickin’ love it! In any case, one of the youth near and dear to my heart recently enquired of me a series of concepts concerning sexuality and masturbation. The kid was coming from a Christian background and didn’t really know what to make of the expression of his sexuality while simultaneously running it parallel to the principles in his personal faith. It’s no news to me that masturbation (and all levels of its discussion) is left out in many conversations in today’s churches.
